Machame Route

The Machame Route, also known as “The Whiskey Route,” is the second most popular path for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s favored for its stunning scenery, offering a diverse range of landscapes and experiences throughout the trek.

Accommodation along the route is camping only, with mobile tents set up at various campsites. These camps are strategically positioned to support a gradual acclimatization process as you ascend.

This 7-day trek is considered challenging and physically demanding, making it ideal for adventurous hikers seeking a more rugged and rewarding climbing experience. However, it allows limited time for acclimatization, so good preparation and fitness are essential.

Day 6

Barafu Camp – Summit

Barafu Camp – Summit

As the morning approaches, excitement fills the air for the most demanding and rewarding part of the climb. The summit push begins around midnight to 1 a.m., marking the most mentally and physically challenging section of the trek.

We ascend steadily between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, staying focused and motivated by the thought of reaching the top. The route follows a switchback trail northwest, climbing through loose scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim, where a breathtaking sunrise awaits as your reward for perseverance.

Those who move swiftly may witness the sunrise from the summit itself. The final one-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak often takes you through snow-covered terrain.

Congratulations — you’ve made it to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent! Take time to celebrate, capture photos, and embrace this incredible moment of triumph.

Afterward, begin your descent to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch and a short rest. The trail can be challenging with loose gravel and volcanic ash, so trekking poles and gaiters are highly recommended.

A well-earned rest awaits you for your final night on the mountain.
